I was destined to be a rock and roll chick. I attended my first concert in the womb when my parents went to see Black Sabbath in 1974. As a young child I listened to my Mother's records, my favorite band being the Beatles. Paul McCartney was my favorite Beatle. The first band I discovered on my own was Loverboy. Loverboy's Keep It Up and Get Lucky and theFlashdance soundtrack were the first cassettes I owned. Loverboy with Joan Jett at Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY was the first concert I attended in 1983. My Dad had a really cool Loverboy sweatshirt custom made for me. I sometimes wore a scarf around my head that was suppose to be like Mike Reno of Loverboy's signature bandana.
Junior high is such an awkward age. My musical tastes were not much better. In junior high, I thought Richard Marx was the coolest. In high school, I had a moment of musically enlightment. I realized that there were more bands out there than what commercial radio forced on its listeners. I started listening to the B-52's and R.E.M. These two bands are still my favorites today.
In high school, I also discovered the talent that resided in my hometown of Lexington, KY . I started becoming a regular at the all ages shows at a club called the Wrocklage. Stranglmartin was the first local band I discovered. Sadly, Stranglmartin is defunct, the Wrocklage is now a restaurant, and the R.E.M.graffiti has been painted over.
I have also had some star sightings. Some were:
-Receiving a Christmas card from Mike Mills of R.E.M. (1991).
-Meeting Better Than Ezra twice (once at Disc Jockey in Lexington 4/28/99 and after the show at Headliners in Louisville 10/24/99)
-Meeting Robin Wilson from the Gin Blossoms after the Gas Giants show at A1A's, Lexington 4/22/00. I didn't have my camera with me but he signed my CD.
-The Twilight Singers show- Top Cat's, Cincinnati 10/15/00. Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs and the Twilight Singers has been such a musical influence on me. This show was really special because I never thought I would have the opportunity to see Greg Dulli play in a club this small and be so close to him that I could touch him. I knew when Greg Dulli crossed the street in front of my car before the show that it was a good omen. Meeting Happy Chichester after the show was really cool too.
-Meeting the Thorns and flirting with Matthew Sweet a little bit at the after show, Continental Inn, Lexington 7/5/03.
-When Nine Inch Nails played in Lexington, August 2008, I spotted drummer Josh Freese, keyboardist Alessandro Cortini, and art director Rob Sheridan, at a comedy club the night before the show.
-Meeting Peter Buck from R.E.M. when he played with the Minus 5 at the Christ the King October Fest in September, 2009. Yes, Peter Buck actually played an event sponsored by a Catholic church.
-Meeting Matt Nathanson three times at meet and greets after his shows, first in Louisville, July 2014, in Cincinnati, July 2016,and in Indianapolis, March 2019.
-Finally meeting Greg Dulli after his show, St. Patrick's Day 2016 in Cincinnati.
-Meeting Robin Wilson from the Gin Blossoms a second time, 12/31/16 in Tempe, AZ. Meet and Greet with the band in Cincinnati 2/17/19
-Afghan Whigs Meet and Greet in Cincinnati, 9/28/17
